Welcome!

Let's hope that what is starting as an assignment for my Intro to Computer class ends up being a great place for all you collectors of Black With Flames diecast cars!

I've had the pleasure of getting to know many great guys in this hobby of collecting diecast cars, and somehow, I wound up getting hooked along with many of them on what we know as "BWF's", to the point where I'm closing in on 700 of these addictive little toys.

This blog is not only my assignment for class, my hope is that this becomes a place for all the Black With Flames collectors to get together and set up trades, look for cars they're missing for their collections, and just have a good time sharing a common interest!

So if you find your way to this blog, please join in with telling us a bit about yourself; who you are, where you're from, how long you've been collecting BWF's and how many you have in your collection - big or small. Maybe tell us how you got started and what drives you to these flamed beauties.

I look forward to hearing from you, and as soon as I can figure out what I'm doing, I'll try to post a few photos.

  1. AQUAXK8 here. I have about 200 or so BWF, not as many as you, but then I only collect the ones I like, rather than everything that's BWF. Been collecting these little pieces of auto-art for about 6 years. Lately, there is not much available to buy, as stores are not stocking diecast much, and, manufacturers are not making too many.

  2. It's not all about collecting BWF. Customizing them is a real challenge and makes for a unique BWF. A while back, a friend gave me a simple black 32 Ford with orange flames. This car now has been customized to have 2 surfboards on the roof, detailed 2-tone interior, zingered chassis with new wheels/tires, scavenger exhaust pipes and other unique points of interest.

  3. Related to what I wrote above, I'm trying to find some tiny letters to put on the back of this customized BWF car. I want to spell out the words 'Old Coot' and give it back to my friend, as he is pretty old and coot-like.

  4. Welcome, David, and thanks for joining us! you're the first of hopefully many BWF lovers to find your way here.

While the BWFs aren't coming in at the rate they used to, there are still a few out there to be found. M2 just did their second series of six cars, these being "musclecars". They were in and out of the stores very quickly, unlike the first set from the '50s. Johnny Lightning has an odd BWF here and threr, and Greenlight is about to release another Black Bandit BWF, looks to be maybe a '65 Fury:

Most of my additions these days though come from Ebay. I'm looking for harder to find cars from Hot Wheels and Racing Champions, and love spotting cars I can grab for about $5 shipped. It can be done!

And yes, I know someone who would get a real kick out of a BWF "Old Coot" car!

  5. I'm going to try a Hobby Talk trick to post internet pics; let's see if it works here:

  7. You can download pics of that old Ford here, from your computer, David. We'd love to see it!

  8. Well I'm not having any luck posting pictures here. When I click the preview button here I don't see a picture of anything I pasted. Being computer illerate, I must be doing something wrong, or maybe blog contributers aren't allowed to post pictures, I don't know. Maybe I need to take a computer class.

  9. I tried to post a pic last night. Found my way to "My Pics" through the Browse button, but it took to long to download and never did post here. Maybe the photos need to be resized smaller (which I have no idea how to do!).

I'll work on it and see what I come up with, or if anyone joins in that knows how to do this, they can post and help us.

  10. hi guys. I'm kevin. I'm not specifically a bwf collector. If I had to give a rough estimate of how many wf cars I have, I'd say about 20. the first bwf I got (or at least the first one I remember getting) was sometime in the late 90's- a black hot wheels stingray. I'd have to go dig out some pics of my bwf cars to show you.

  12. Welcome, Kevin!
For those not familiar with him, this is Jet Threat Kevin, from Joe's Diecast Shack!

Which brings something to mind: if anyone wants to post this blog to any of the diecast discussion boards (Hobby Talk, JL TAlk, Swifty's, Joe's Diecast Shack, or any others) please feel free to. The more people involved in this blog, the more people you'll have to trade BWFs with!

  15. While looking in my car storage cases today, I came across a Hot Wheels custom 53 Chevy. It was BWF but the flames were ghost flames. Black flames on a black car. The flames were outlined, however. Cool looking Chevy BWF.

  16. Hello let's make attempt 5 to do this.

snowowl out of New England. I have a few BWF in my collection but nothing like my 6 year old daughter's collection. She has about 100 vehicles in her collection that are Flames. If you ask what her favorite color is She will shout "BLACK WITH FLAMES!" for everyone to hear.

  17. Snow Owl is Leigh, out of NH with two darling daughters, one of whom - Buffy? - collects BWFs. Leigh and family are attendees at past Johnny Jams as well.

David, we need to figure out how to post pics so we can see that Cheby

  18. Hi Rich and everyone else,

Most of you know me from other diecast boards as Dragnet_Supporter. Great idea building a BWF site. I Have been collecting diecast for going on 11 years of my adult life, and BWFs for about 4 or 5 years now. Some would call me a slow collector, having acquired 235 BWF cars currently in my collection. I collect all brands, and all sizes in this category, however, only a handful are larger than 1:64 scale.

I have some extra JL BWFs laying around that I will get together and post pictures, or info on them, later. All are up for trade or simply for the taking, if anyone needs them. My second passion, with nearly as many cars to its credit, is police and rescue vehicles. Sometimes the occasional police car has crossed over into the BWF category, which sort of connects my two primary diecast collections.

For me, diecast collecting is one part linked to the inner child, who looks at toy cars pretty much the same way I did as a kid, remembering the joy of yesteryear. Another part of me looks at these tiny representations of automobiles as an art form. I am not a car historian, nor am I very mechanically inclined. But when a diecast piece is done right, and captures many of the details of the actual cars they are based on, this brings the inner child into a new level of appreciation--both for the hobby, and the real life cars which inspire them. So the hobby has been educational for me as well. And probably more than the diecast itself--though I’ve come to love these little cars over the years--is the final part (or reason, if you will, that keeps me collecting) which is the fellow collectors I’ve met along the way. If all my hobbies and interests could only have the sort of helpful, decent folks I’ve met through collecting diecast, my cup would runneth over. But I feel blessed to be a part of such a community of people who stay connected through the simple joy of a sculpted hunk of metal and plastic, with absolutely no electronic or wireless capabilities. That’s a rarity in these high-tech days in and of itself.

  19. Welcome to the blog, Robert! For those who don't know DragnetSupporter, Robert is one of the most insightful and cerebral people I have ever met in this hobby, and it's a joy to read his postings!

We've had the pleasure of meeting him both at Johnny Jam, as well as CARnival, and he's typical of the great folks in this hobby.

    Welcome aboard, DS!

  22. Thanks Brad, and welcome! Just wait until we get into the trading and selling part of the blog. Cars are hopefuly going to be flying all over the country! And we'll get into spotlighting different collections, which will help all of us possibly spot cars in other people's collections which we previously didn't know about! Then we'll be discussing newly released cars and upcoming releases as well. Maybe at some point we'll get a little input from the manufacturers, who knows!

  29. I found that when the main blogger makes a new post, that person can post pictures. Not sure if anyone can post pictures on someone elses blog...

  30. Hey Snow...that's what I was thinking too.
I guess it's up to Rich to do all the picture posting, lol.

  31. No, like I said elsewhere, I'd have no problem making you all associate admins, if that's what it takes for each of you to have the ability to post pics0

By the way, let's not forget that I haven't been able to post a pic yet, either! I've tried using my own pics (they never fully load) as well as "borrowing" pics from the 'net. Nothing has worked yet, but I chalk that up to inexperience on my part so far.

    We'll get this fixed!

  34. Welcome to the board, Johnny!

Folks, "Johnny" is actually Jeremy Morin, President of the Lincoln (RI) Johnny Lightning Race Club, a group dedicated to monthly meets which feature racing JLs and other diecast cars down a very cool track! The group frequently does charity work and goes to great lengths to bring kids into this hobby. They also welcome vendors to their meets and I've found several BWFs there that I didn't have!

Jeremy, please pass an invitation to this blog on to any of your members, and by all means, put a link to your group's website in a comment, maybe even start a new thread to tell everyone a bit about your club.
